Your data and privacy

Your family's stories are precious. Here's exactly what happens to them, first in plain words, then in full.

In plain words

What Yume keeps

  • Your name, email, date of birth, city and language, so Yume can ask questions that suit you.
  • The stories, voice notes, videos and photos you share, and your reactions and comments.
  • The written version of what you say in recordings, and translations of it.

Who can see it

Only people in your family who have joined with your family's invite links. Nothing on Yume is public. If your family shares a friends' link for someone you're remembering, those friends can see memories of that one person only.

Where it's kept

Your family's stories, recordings and photos are stored privately in London, on Supabase, a database service. Each family's things are locked off from every other family's. Recordings and photos are only shown through private links that stop working after an hour.

Who else handles it, and why

  • Anthropic (the makers of Claude) helps write your questions, translate stories and write life story chapters.
  • OpenAI turns voice notes and videos into text, and reads stories aloud.
  • Brevo, a French company, sends Yume's emails, such as sign-in codes and reminders.

None of them may use your family's stories to train their AI. They only use what we send them to do the job we ask, and the AI services are in the United States.

While we move: families who joined our early beta are still on our old setup, which runs on Base44 in the United States, where on our old plan app data could be used to improve AI. We're moving every family across to the setup above in the coming weeks, and we'll switch Base44 off once everyone has moved.

What we never do

We never sell your data, show you adverts or make anything public. We don't share your stories with anyone outside your family unless the law requires it.

What you're in control of

  • Download everything your family has shared, from the Me tab in the app.
  • Edit or delete anything you've shared.
  • Remove a story someone recorded for you.
  • Delete your account and everything you've shared, from Me, then Your data and privacy.
  • Ask what we hold about you, or anything else, at hello@yume.family.

Privacy policy in full

Last updated: 6 October 2026

1. Who we are

Yume is run by Simon Duong, in London ("we", "us"). We're setting Yume up as its own limited company, and will add its name, address and registration details here when that's done. We decide how and why your personal data is used, which makes us the data controller under UK data protection law (the UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act 2018). You can contact us about anything in this policy at hello@yume.family.

2. What we collect

3. Why we use it, and our lawful basis

What we doLawful basis
Run your family's private space: store and show what you share, transcribe and translate it, write questions and chapters, send reminders and notifications. To provide the service you've signed up for (contract).
Keep Yume secure, fix problems and improve it, including looking at feedback and how features are used during the beta. Our legitimate interests in running a safe, working app.
Push notifications and emails.Your consent, which you can turn off at any time in the app.
Sensitive details you choose to include in your stories (for example about health, religion or ethnicity).Your explicit consent when you choose to share them. We only use them to show your story to your family.

4. Children

You need to be 13 or over to have a Yume account. Parents can add a page for a younger child; the parents look after that page and decide what's on it, and can remove anything at any time. When a child turns 13, their parents can invite them to their own account, which links them to their page.

5. Who we share it with

We don't sell personal data or share it for advertising. We use these service providers, who process data for us under contract:

We may also share data if the law requires it, or to protect someone's safety.

6. International transfers

Your family's space is stored in London, and our email provider keeps its data in the EU. Some of our providers are US companies, and the AI services (Anthropic and OpenAI) process what we send them in the United States. Where data leaves the UK, we rely on the protections in our providers' data processing terms, such as the UK International Data Transfer Addendum or the UK-US data bridge, to keep it protected to UK standards.

7. How long we keep it

We keep your data while you have an account. If you delete something, it's removed from your family's space straight away. If you delete your account, we delete your profile and everything you've shared, except stories you recorded for someone else, which belong to them. Copies in our providers' backups are removed within 30 days. If the last person in a family deletes their account, the whole family space is deleted.

8. Your rights

You can ask us to: see the data we hold about you; correct it; delete it; limit how we use it; give it to you in a portable format; or stop using it where we rely on legitimate interests. You can withdraw consent at any time. Email hello@yume.family and we'll reply within a month. Many of these you can also do yourself in the app: download, edit, delete and delete your account.

9. Cookies and storage

Yume doesn't use advertising or tracking cookies. The app stores a few settings on your device (such as your language and text size) and a sign-in token so you stay signed in. Our website loads fonts from Google Fonts, which means Google receives your device's IP address when you visit.

10. Complaints

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, please tell us first. You can also complain to the Information Commissioner's Office: ico.org.uk/make-a-complaint or 0303 123 1113.

11. Changes

If we change this policy in a way that matters, we'll tell you in the app before it takes effect.
